Turns out that the Canadian wildfires won’t interrupt Smithfield High School’s pursuit of three state championships this weekend.
The Virginia High School League announced Thursday that the Class 4 state semifinals and finals – also known as the Spring Jubilee – will be played as scheduled Friday and Saturday in Spotsylvania County, near Fredericksburg. VHSL officials had said Wednesday that they were monitoring air pollution caused by wildfires in Canada and might reschedule if conditions worsened.
Smithfield High’s girls soccer team will play Tuscarora at 11 a.m. Friday, hoping to advance to Saturday’s 10 a.m. championship match again the Great Bridge-Western Albemarle winner.
The Packer boys soccer team will play Loudon County in the semifinals at 3 p.m. Friday with an eye on Saturday’s 12:30 p.m. state title match against the Jamestown-Jefferson Forest winner.
The SHS baseball team plays Tuscarora in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Friday. The championship game against the Hanover-James Wood semifinal winner will be at 11 a.m. Saturday.
A $10 general admission ticket covers access to all three Smithfield High games on Friday.
